To honor 40 years of recommending science books, AAAS, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, announces the Subaru/SB&F Key Award for Excellence in Science Books. The Subaru/SB&F Key Award, named after Benjamin Franklin and his famous key and kite experiment, marks the creation of the first award in the U.S. exclusively devoted to honoring outstanding science books for all age groups. Franklin, a scientist, avid reader and founder of the first library, is an icon of science and serves as a fitting symbol for an award which promotes science literacy by drawing attention to the importance of high-quality science publications.

In the first year of the Award, Subaru and SB&F will give out six lifetime achievement awards for authors and illustrators of children's, young adult, and general audience science books. The Key Award will honor five authors and one illustrator in recognition of their distinguished and lasting contribution to the world of science books. In subsequent years, the Key Award will be given to recently published individual books, which promote scientific literacy and adhere to high standards of scientific accuracy.
