Another November Day

I fall asleep for the night,
Lulled by the patter of raindrops on my window.
I awake to the scampering of footsteps on my roof
That come to an abrupt stop.
I find a friend on my sill framed by a cloudy gray day.
The woods are wet with a coating rain.
My friend and I exchange glances while I snap some digital shots.
The flash doesn't alarm my neighbor. I wonder.
Does this gray squirrel see me?
Or a reflection mirrored in the glass?
No matter. Scampering away, we both start our day.
By afternoon the storm passes to the east.
Sunbeams stream from the west . . .
Beneath the layer of remaining dark clouds,
And fall on barren winter-ready woods.
The late afternoon light puts me at one with the woods.
I'm surrounded within a tangle of flowerless flowering quince.
The woods and I feel the cool winds coming from the west.
The brisk breeze hastens the coming clear sky,
While my furry friend and I busy ourselves,
Each at our immediate tasks
Both tasks with their own impending deadline.
