| I fall asleep for the night, Lulled by the patter of raindrops on my window. |

| I awake to the scampering of footsteps on my roof That come to an abrupt stop. |

| I find a friend on my sill framed by a cloudy gray day. The woods are wet with a coating rain. |

| My friend and I exchange glances while I snap some digital shots. The flash doesn't alarm my neighbor. I wonder. Does this gray squirrel see me? Or a reflection mirrored in the glass? No matter. Scampering away, we both start our day. |

| By afternoon the storm passes to the east. Sunbeams stream from the west . . . |

| Beneath the layer of remaining dark clouds, And fall on barren winter-ready woods. |

| The late afternoon light puts me at one with the woods. | |

| I'm surrounded within a tangle of flowerless flowering quince. The woods and I feel the cool winds coming from the west. |

| The brisk breeze hastens the coming clear sky, While my furry friend and I busy ourselves, Each at our immediate tasks Both tasks with their own impending deadline. |
