Fallen Leaves, Season's End

Back to the News
The remaining leaves announce their departure
In reds and yellows.
Reds fall from the solitary blueberry bush.
Yellows from the diminutive quince.
And deeper yellows from the apples.
November has arrived.
The last of the reddish browns on the oaks
Bid me goodbye for the year.
The world around me is going to sleep.
I search for the last of the small good-byes,
The last of the blueberry bush crimson,
I search for the last of the colorful gold,
The last of the Rosa Rugosa yellow.
Not all are going, a green surprise, new life speaks,
But not for long.
It will soon be saying its goodbye too,
Like the brown of the oaks.

The air is still, but not for long.
Brisk winds announce the coming winter.
They blow red-brown color by my window,
As I work and play inside on a color-filled book
Of the faraway north of dear Iceland.
All that remains outside is brown,
Soon to be covered in white.
Inside I find the colors of Iceland
Coming to life on the pages of my book.
